Q-Tine: How a Sudden Change in Lifestyle Factors Can Influence PMS
Hey Sprouts!
Today out of quarantine curiosity I started researching PMS and how a lack of physical activity could impact it. Reason being, my phone reminded me I wasn't getting my steps in lol Anyway I found the perfect article. Life Style Factors Associated with Premenstrual Syndrome among El-Minia University Students, Egypt. I'll leave the link below:
https://www.hindawi.com/journals/isrn/2013/617123/
It's six pages though....so basically what it said was:
- BMI - positively associated with risk of specific physical and emotional symptoms:
- swelling of the extremities
- backache
- abdominal cramping
- diarrhea/constipation
- mood swings
- food cravings
- Physical Activity or Lack Thereof
- 91% of students who were sedentary (largely inactive) had PMS compared to 49.2% who reported being physically active.
- Physical activity (specifically aerobic exercise) was shown to alleviate symptoms like water retention, automatic reactions and appetite.
- Food Choice
- There was a significant association between PMS symptoms and intake of sweet-tasting foods.
- Coffee drinks (especially those with chocolate) were shown without doubt to have significant impact on PMS severity, increasing it.
- Decreased consumption of fruits and vegetables increased likelihood of symptoms.
- Smoking Exposure (Tobacco)
- Likely to increase symptoms.
So! We're (well most of us at this point) in quarantine now, which means our bodies have to adjust to this new lack of consistent physical activity we lost with outside privileges. So with that in mind, if you can't get in a little yoga or pilates time at home, consider adjusting your dietary and recreational habits.
