Jane’s Declassified (Online) School Survival Guide

Hey Lil Sprouts!

So the 'Rona definitely got a little more serious than I originally thought (LOL). Please do your best to pay attention to the CDC's updates, and do your part by practicing social distancing and good hygienic habits. Now to the point. A lot of us have had our school's closed and must now embark on a journey of remote learning...(a joke).  If you didn't know before, online classes are way more difficult than in person classes, because it's ALL. ON. YOU. With that being said, I put together some tips for you all! Here go my lil survival guide:

-Your availability does not equal your free time! Schedule the specific times you’ll be available to work on your
assignments by class.
  • Be sure to include specific due dates and times.
  • Class Organizing Strategies
    • By due date
    • By original class syllabus/schedule
    • Checkered, 2 classes on 1 day, the other 2 on another
    • Interesting Class 1/Boring Class 2 (Mon/Wed); Interesting 2/Boring 1 (Tue/Thu)
      • Pro Tip: Invest in bullet journaling…
  • If you have live lectures, set reminders and alarms for at least 10-20 minutes before so you have a few minutes to prepare if you you forgot.

  • Do NOT attempt to work from your bed.
  • Even if you sit on the floor with your back against the wall, it’ll be better than being 2 inches from sleep.
  • Set up a work space in a minimal distraction area with all necessary materials in reach.
  • Put your phone on silent and (besides maybe a study playlist) try to avoid it.

  • Make a study playlist and have snacks and water handy!
  • Set small goals & “reward” yourself with snacks, timed breaks, drugs etc.
  • Use a habit tracker to track your productivity over periods of time.
  • Choose a study buddy (even a virtual one) who will keep you accountable.

*Become as familiar as possible with your device.
*Practice resetting your wireless router, be familiar with troubleshooting techniques or have resources handy.

*Get to know your professors. Establish an email dialogue with them.
*Ask if they are comfortable with utilizing Zoom calls as opposed to in person office hours.
...They will be more willing to help you if you stand out from other students.

*Ask questions for clarification even if it seems redundant.
*Take advantage of your school’s resources (MS Suite, Online Library etc.)

*Beat your due dates! How you bored and you got a whole online class worth of work to do?
